Bhaktapur is worth slowing down for. Move between its squares on foot, notice the carved façades, and leave time for the side streets. A rushed stop at the main square misses much of the city’s character.

History & fast facts.
Medieval Newar capital & four-square brick city. Cultural and architectural context to look out for while you explore.
Medieval capital of the unified valley
Known in Nepal Bhasa as Khwopa, Bhaktapur served as the capital of the entire Kathmandu Valley under the early Malla kings from the 12th to the late 15th century, preserving a remarkably cohesive network of pedestrian brick lanes and water spouts (hiti).
Nyatapola: Nepal’s tallest pagoda temple
Completed in 1702 under King Bhupatindra Malla in Taumadhi Square, the five-tiered Nyatapola Temple rises roughly 30 meters above a five-stage brick plinth. Pairs of stone guardians—wrestlers, elephants, lions, griffins, and goddesses—flank the stairways, and the structure survived both the 1934 and 2015 earthquakes.
55-Window Palace & the Golden Gate
In Durbar Square, the royal palace features a dark-timber upper gallery of 55 latticed windows alongside Lu Dhowka (the Golden Gate, 1754), a masterwork of gilt-copper repoussé crowned by Garuda and the multi-headed goddess Taleju Bhawani.
Peacock Window, pottery & juju dhau
East in Dattatreya Square, the 15th-century Pujari Math displays the celebrated carved wooden Peacock Window. Across town in Pottery Square, families shape local clay on spinning wheels, including the porous terracotta cups used to set juju dhau ("king curd"), Bhaktapur’s signature sweetened buffalo-milk yogurt.

A taste of the neighbourhood.
Try juju dhau, Bhaktapur’s famous yogurt, if you eat dairy. Check storage and freshness. Sit down for a Newari lunch rather than squeezing the city into a quick stop.
