ktmtour.A Kathmandu field guide

Useful before you go. Handy when you’re there.

A few things
worth knowing.

Practical notes for exploring the valley independently, with respect for the people who call it home.

01 / Tickets & timing

Keep cash.
Keep it flexible.

Heritage entry fees vary by nationality, age and included museums. The numbers below are conservative planning amounts for foreign visitors, not confirmed current ticket prices. SAARC, Chinese and Nepali visitor rates may differ. Bring identification for any concession you claim and keep your ticket.

Check the Nepal Tourism Board fee listing and confirm at the official ticket counter. Separate temples or museums can charge extra.

There isn’t one opening time.

An outdoor square may be accessible when its museum is closed. Ask locally for that day’s temple and museum hours. Festivals, ceremonies and maintenance can change access. Sunrise and evening suggestions in this guide describe atmosphere, not guaranteed opening hours.

02 / Getting around

Distance is only
half the story.

Traffic can turn a short journey into a long one. Choose one part of the valley per day rather than crossing back and forth. Use a taxi or an available ride service for transfers; agree the fare or check the app price before leaving.

  • Show the destination name and map pin to the driver. Several places have multiple gates.
  • Local buses and microbuses can be economical, but routes and stops are not always obvious. Confirm the destination and fare before boarding.
  • Walk between nearby stops within each heritage area. Watch for motorbikes, broken paving and traffic even in narrow lanes.
  • For Bhaktapur, give the return journey its own time buffer. Do not schedule it tightly before a flight.

Map links open Google Maps. Download the Kathmandu area in your map app before you leave Wi-Fi; this website’s offline pack does not include navigation maps.

03 / Being a thoughtful guest

People first.
Pictures second.

  • Walk clockwise around Buddhist stupas and leave room for pilgrims.
  • Dress respectfully at religious sites and remove shoes wherever requested.
  • Ask before photographing people, rituals, workshops or monastery interiors.
  • The main Pashupatinath temple admits Hindus only. Public complex access is separate.
  • Do not photograph cremations, grieving families or the Kumari. Follow on-site restrictions.
  • Ask the price before accepting guiding, posed photographs or blessings that may involve payment.
  • Keep a respectful distance from monkeys and dogs. Do not carry exposed food around monkeys.

04 / Pack for the day

A lighter bag.
A better walk.

Food, water & weather

Choose freshly cooked food, ask about ingredients and use safe drinking water. Check the day’s weather and air quality before a long outdoor walk. Rain can make stone steps slippery; haze can obscure valley views.

Keep these
within reach.
